Standard Zone

Standard Zone Replication menggunakan topologi single master. Satu server DNS sebagai primary zone dan DNS server lain dikonfigurasi sebagai secondary zone. Primary zone adalah satu-satunya zone yang memungkinkan kemampuan write (mengubah), sedangkan secondary zone hanya mempunyai kemampuan copy. Server-server yang bertindak sebagai secondary zone akan mereplikasi informasi zone dari server master. Server master bisa sebuah server yang bertindak sebagai primary zone atau secondary zone. Yang mendefinisikan server yang bertindak sebagai server master adalah administrator

Pada topologi standard zone replication, jika server yang bertindak sebagai server master fail, maka server-server yang dikonfigurasi untuk menerima replikasi informasi zone dari server master tidak akan bisa mengupdate informasi zone. Administrator harus secara manual memperbaiki error atau mendefinisikan ulang topologi zona transfer untuk meyakinkan resolusi nama bisa berlangsung tanpa halangan. Selain itu, jika server DNS yang bertindak sebagai primary zone fail, maka zone tidak bisa dimodifikasi.

Active Directory Integrated Zone

Ketika menggunakan integrated zone pada Active Directory, proses zona transfer digantikan oleh replikasi Active Directory. Topologi replikasi DNS tidak perlu didefinisikan secara manual, karena Active Directory menggenerate topologi replikasi secara otomatis. Jika sebuah server fail, Active Directory akan mereplikasi dari server yang lain. Semakin banyak domain controller yang ditambahkan pada Active Directory integrated zone, domain controller secara otomatis menjadi bagian topologi replikasi. Selain itu, karena Active Directory bersifat multimaster, proses update pada zone bisa dilakukan oleh server yang menjadi bagian Active Directory Integrated Zone. Sebuah server fail tidak akan mencegah proses update selama lebih dari satu domain controller mempunyai copy dari zone. Active Directory integrated zone menyediakan keamanan jaringan yang lebih baik daripada standar zone. Replikasi Active Directory dienkripsi dan keamanan ditambahkan pada Active Directory integrated zone untuk mengontrol user yang memodifikasi data zone.
