Remote Desktop adalah sebuah program atau fitur sistem operasi yang memungkinkan user untuk terkoneksi dengan computer di lokasi yang lain. Orang-orang menggunakan kemampuan remote desktop untuk mengerjakan berbagai hal dari jarak jauh, mencakup hal berikut ini :

Mengakses komputer kantor dari rumah atau ketika sedang bepergian

  • Mengakses komputer rumah dari lokasi yang berbeda.
  • Memperbaiki masalah komputer
  • Melakukan tugas administrative
  • Mendemonstrasikan proses atau software aplikasi

Konektivitas remote desktop bertumpu pada sejumlah protokol, yaitu Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Virtual Network Computing (VNC), NX Technology dan Independent Computing Architecture (ICA).

Software remote desktop telah ada untuk kebanayakan sistem operasi dan platform. Microsoft dan Apple mempunyai produk yang bernama “Remote Desktop”. Produk remote desktop yang lain adalah Citrix XenApp, CrossLoop, Jaadu (untuk IPhone dan iPod Touch), GoToMyPC, pcAnywhere dan Chicken of the VNC.
