Drupal adalah kerangka kerja modular dan Content Management System yang ditulis dengan bahasa pemrograman PHP. Drupal digunakan sebagai sistem “back end” untuk berbagai macam tipe website, dari pembuatan blog sampai website perusahaan.

Drupal standar rilis dikenal dengan nama Drupal Core yang terdiri dari fitur-fitur umum seperti kebanyakan CMS. Fitur-fitur tersebut termasuk kemampuan untuk meregister dan me-maintain user account individual, menu-menu administrasi, RSS-feed, layout yang bisa di-customise, account privilege yang fleksibel, logging, sistem blogging, forum internet dan pilihan-pilihan untuk membuat  Website “brochureware” klasik  atau website komunitas interaktif.

Drupal juga didesain untuk memungkinkan fitur-fitur baru dan custom behaviour untuk ditambahkan sebagai third party sehingga Drupal sering disebut sebagai Content Management Framework. Meskipun Drupal memberikan interface programming yang menarik, tidak dibutuhkan kemampuan programming untuk proses instalasi dan administrasinya.

Drupal bisa dijalankan di berbagai platform computing yang mendukung:

• Web Server yang mendukung PHP (versi 4.3.5+) termasuk Apache, IIS, Lighttpd dan nginx
• Database seperti MySQL atau PostgreSQL untuk menyimpan content dan setting.
